What is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax? A plain-English guide

Making Tax Digital (MTD) is HMRC’s move from one paper-style tax return a year to digital records and a short update every three months. Here is what it means in practice.

What stays the same

Who is in, and when

FromIf your qualifying income is overBased on your tax return for
6 April 2026£50,0002024/25
6 April 2027£30,0002025/26 (due 31 January 2027)
6 April 2028 (planned)£20,0002026/27

Qualifying income is your gross self-employment takings plus your gross rental income, before any costs. See why MTD counts takings, not profit.

What to do now

  1. Add up your 2025/26 takings and rent. Over £30,000? You’re in from April 2027.
  2. Decide: software and do it yourself, or an accountant who handles the quarterly updates for you. See software or accountant?
  3. Start keeping records digitally now, so April isn’t a scramble.
