Anyone in the UK can call themselves an accountant. Ask which professional body they belong to (for example ICAEW, ACCA, AAT, CIOT or ATT) and check their membership number on that body’s website. They must also be supervised for anti-money-laundering.
Less than it used to – most MTD work is done online through software such as Xero, FreeAgent or QuickBooks. A nearby firm is handy if you want to meet in person or drop off paperwork.
Companies House’s free company data: every active company whose business type is accounting and auditing, bookkeeping or tax consultancy. Dormant companies and those registered at formation-agent addresses are left out. Sole practitioners who aren’t limited companies won’t appear unless they join our panel.
