## The key facts, as of 26 October 2026

- **What is it?** HMRC’s rule that sole traders and landlords above an income threshold keep digital records in recognised software and send a summary every quarter.

- **What do you file?** Four quarterly updates (due 7 August, 7 November, 7 February, 7 May) and a final declaration by 31 January.
- **Who’s not in?** Partnerships and limited companies, for now. Some people can apply for an exemption.

## Three questions. Three quotes. One decision – yours.

### Answer 3 questions

We check whether, and from when, Making Tax Digital applies to you.

### We match you

Up to 3 accountants near you who specialise in sole traders or landlords and use HMRC-recognised software.

### Compare & choose

## Every accountant is checked before they see your details.

Anyone in the UK can call themselves an accountant, so we check four things first. Accountants pay us for each introduction – that's how this stays free for you.

- **Professional body membership:** Membership number checked against ICAEW, ACCA, AAT, CIOT/ATT or ICAS registers.
- **Anti-money-laundering supervision:** Every practice must be AML-supervised, as UK law requires.
- **Set up for MTD:** They must be able to file quarterly updates for clients using HMRC-recognised software.
- **Fixed-fee quotes:** Practices agree to quote you a clear fixed fee, so you can compare like for like.

## What will an accountant cost?

Typical monthly fees for Making Tax Digital, so you know what a fair quote looks like before anyone calls.

| You are… | You do it yourself | Accountant files for you | Full service |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Sole trader, one business** | £0–£15 | £30–£60 | £60–£120 |
| **Construction trades (often CIS)** | £0–£15 | £35–£70 | £70–£130 |
| **Online sellers and traders** | £0–£20 | £40–£75 | £80–£150 |
| **Landlord, 1–3 UK properties** | £0–£15 | £25–£50 | £50–£90 |
| **Self-employed and a landlord** | £0–£20 | £50–£90 | £90–£160 |
| **Overseas property** | £0–£15 | £50–£90 | £80–£150 |

Per month. Indicative ranges from published UK price lists, checked October 2026. Not a quote – your fee depends on how many transactions you have, how tidy your records are and where you live.

### What a fixed-fee quote should include

- All 4 quarterly updates *and* the final declaration (your tax return)
- The MTD software licence – or whether you pay for it separately
- Whether they do the bookkeeping or only check what you’ve recorded
- A reminder before each deadline and an estimate of the tax to put aside
- Whether VAT (20%) is added on top – not every practice charges it

### Worth knowing

- Accountancy fees for your business or lettings are an allowable expense, so they reduce your tax bill.
- If your records are simple, doing it yourself can cost little or nothing – some HMRC-recognised software is free.
- Ask for a fixed monthly or yearly fee, not an hourly rate, so the price can’t creep up.

### What is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?

An HMRC rule that requires sole traders and landlords above an income threshold to keep digital records with compatible software and send a summary of income and expenses every quarter, followed by a final declaration after the tax year ends.

### How much does an accountant charge for MTD?

Roughly £30–£60 a month for a sole trader and £25–£50 for a landlord with 1–3 properties, if you keep your records in an app and the accountant sends the updates. See our price guide for other situations.

### Does it cost me anything to use MTD Match?

No. Accountants pay us to be introduced to you. You only pay an accountant if you decide to hire one.

### I'm under £30,000 – do I need to do anything?

Not yet, but the threshold is planned to fall to £20,000 from April 2028. You can still ask for quotes or join voluntarily.

### I'm a landlord with a jointly owned property. How is income counted?

Usually only your share of the gross rent counts towards your qualifying income. An accountant can confirm your position.

### Who are the accountants?

UK practices that hold professional body membership (e.g. ICAEW, ACCA, AAT, CIOT/ATT) and supervision for anti-money-laundering, and who are set up to file MTD quarterly updates for clients.
